Vergina was established in 1922 in the aftermath of the\u00a0<a title=\"Population exchange between Greece and Turkey\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Population_exchange_between_Greece_and_Turkey\">population exchanges<\/a>\u00a0after the\u00a0<a title=\"Treaty of Lausanne\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treaty_of_Lausanne\">Treaty of Lausanne<\/a>\u00a0and was a separate\u00a0<a title=\"Municipalities and communities of Greece\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Municipalities_and_communities_of_Greece\">municipality<\/a>\u00a0until 2011, when it was merged with Veroia under the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Kallikratis Plan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kallikratis_Plan\">Kallikratis Plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Vergina is best known as the site of ancient\u00a0<b><a title=\"Aegae (Macedonia)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aegae_(Macedonia)\">Aigai<\/a><\/b>\u00a0(<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ancient Greek language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ancient_Greek_language\">Ancient Greek<\/a>:\u00a0<span lang=\"grc\">\u0391\u1f30\u03b3\u03b1\u03af<\/span>,\u00a0<span title=\"Ancient Greek (to 1453)-language romanization\"><i lang=\"grc-Latn\">Aiga\u00ed<\/i><\/span>,\u00a0<a title=\"Latinisation of names\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latinisation_of_names\">Latinized<\/a>:\u00a0<i>Aegae<\/i>), the first capital of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macedon\">Macedon<\/a>. In 336 BC\u00a0<a title=\"Philip II of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_II_of_Macedon\">Philip II<\/a>\u00a0was assassinated in Aigai&#8217;s theatre and his son,\u00a0<a title=\"Alexander the Great\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_the_Great\">Alexander the Great<\/a>, was proclaimed king. While the resting place of Alexander the Great is unknown, researchers uncovered three tombs at Vergina in 1977 \u2013 referred to as tombs I, II and III.<\/p>\n<p>Tomb I contained\u00a0<a title=\"Philip II of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_II_of_Macedon\">Philip II, Alexander the Great&#8217;s father<\/a>, tomb II belonged to\u00a0<a title=\"Philip III of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_III_of_Macedon\">Philip III of Macedon<\/a>, Alexander the Great&#8217;s half-brother, while tomb III contained\u00a0<a title=\"Alexander IV of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_IV_of_Macedon\">Alexander IV<\/a>, Alexander the Great&#8217;s son.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-2\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>2<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-3\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>3<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Tomb I had been looted; Tombs II and III were intact and contained an array of burial goods. The ancient town was also the site of an extensive royal palace. The archaeological museum of Vergina was built to house all the\u00a0<a title=\"Artifact (archaeology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artifact_(archaeology)\">artifacts<\/a>\u00a0found at the site and is one of the most important museums in Greece.<sup id=\"cite_ref-unesco_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-unesco-4\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>4<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Aigai has been awarded\u00a0<a title=\"UNESCO\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UNESCO\">UNESCO<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"World Heritage Site\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Heritage_Site\">World Heritage Site<\/a>\u00a0status as &#8220;an exceptional testimony to a significant development in European civilization, at the transition from classical\u00a0<a title=\"City-state\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/City-state\">city-state<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0<a title=\"Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Empire\">imperial<\/a>\u00a0structure of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Hellenistic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hellenistic\">Hellenistic<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Ancient Rome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ancient_Rome\">Roman<\/a>\u00a0periods&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-unesco_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-unesco-4\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>4<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>Archaeology<\/h3>\n<p>Archaeologists were interested in the burial mounds around Vergina as early as the 1850s, supposing that the site of Aigai was in the vicinity. Excavations began in 1861 under the French archaeologist\u00a0<a title=\"L\u00e9on Heuzey\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/L%C3%A9on_Heuzey\">L\u00e9on Heuzey<\/a>, sponsored by\u00a0<a title=\"Napoleon III\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Napoleon_III\">Napoleon III<\/a>. Parts of a large building that was considered to be one of the palaces of\u00a0<a title=\"Antigonus III Doson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antigonus_III_Doson\">Antigonus III Doson<\/a>\u00a0(263\u2013221 BC), partly destroyed by fire, were discovered near Palatitsa, which preserved the memory of a palace in its modern name. However, the excavations had to be abandoned because of the risk of\u00a0<a title=\"Malaria\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malaria\">malaria<\/a>. The excavator suggested that this was the site of the ancient city Valla, a view that prevailed until 1976.<sup id=\"cite_ref-21\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-21\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>21<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 1937, the University of Thessaloniki resumed the excavations. More ruins of the ancient palace were found, but the excavations were abandoned on the outbreak of war with\u00a0<a title=\"Italy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italy\">Italy<\/a>\u00a0in 1940. After the war the excavations were resumed, and during the 1950s and 1960s the rest of the royal capital was uncovered, including the theatre.<\/p>\n<p>The Greek archaeologist\u00a0<a title=\"Manolis Andronikos\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manolis_Andronikos\">Manolis Andronikos<\/a>\u00a0became convinced that a hill called the\u00a0<i><a class=\"new\" title=\"Royal tombs of Vergina (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Royal_tombs_of_Vergina&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Great Tumulus<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(\u039c\u03b5\u03b3\u03ac\u03bb\u03b7 \u03a4\u03bf\u03cd\u03bc\u03c0\u03b1) concealed the tombs of the Macedonian kings. In 1977, Andronikos undertook a six-week dig at the Great Tumulus and found four buried tombs, two of which had never been disturbed. Andronikos identified that these were the burial sites of the kings of Macedon, including the tomb of\u00a0<a title=\"Philip II of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_II_of_Macedon\">Philip II<\/a>, father of\u00a0<a title=\"Alexander the Great\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_the_Great\">Alexander the Great<\/a>\u00a0(Tomb II) and also of\u00a0<a title=\"Alexander IV of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_IV_of_Macedon\">Alexander IV of Macedon<\/a>, son of Alexander the Great and\u00a0<a title=\"Roxana\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roxana\">Roxana<\/a>\u00a0(Tomb III). This view was challenged by some archaeologists,<sup id=\"cite_ref-22\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-22\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>22<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-23\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-23\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>23<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-24\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-24\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>24<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and in 2010 research based on detailed study of the skeletons, vindicated Andronikos and supports the evidence of facial asymmetry caused by a possible trauma of the cranium of the male, evidence that is consistent with the history of Philip II.<sup id=\"cite_ref-25\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-25\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>25<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-26\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-26\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>26<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0From 1987 the burial cluster of the queens was discovered including the tomb of Queen\u00a0<a title=\"Eurydice I of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eurydice_I_of_Macedon\">Eurydice<\/a>. In March 2014, five more royal tombs were discovered in Vergina, possibly belonging to\u00a0<a title=\"Alexander I of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_I_of_Macedon\">Alexander I of Macedon<\/a>\u00a0and his family or to the family of\u00a0<a title=\"Cassander\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cassander\">Cassander<\/a>\u00a0of Macedon. Some artifacts excavated at Vergina may be treated as influenced by Asian practices or even imported from\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Achaemenid Persia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Achaemenid_Persia\">Achaemenid Persia<\/a>\u00a0in late 6th and early 5th centuries BC,<sup id=\"cite_ref-27\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-27\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>27<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0which is during the time\u00a0<a title=\"Macedonia (ancient kingdom)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macedonia_(ancient_kingdom)\">Macedon<\/a>\u00a0was under the Persian sway.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, nearly 50 years later, a study led by professor of anthropology at the\u00a0<a title=\"Democritus University of Thrace\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democritus_University_of_Thrace\">Democritus University of Thrace<\/a>\u00a0Antonios Bartsiokas &#8216;conclusively&#8217; revealed that the skeleton long identified as belonging to\u00a0<a title=\"Alexander IV of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_IV_of_Macedon\">Alexander IV of Macedon<\/a>\u00a0is in fact his father\u00a0<a title=\"Philip II of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_II_of_Macedon\">Philip II of Macedon<\/a>, and vice versa: Tomb I contained\u00a0<a title=\"Philip II of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_II_of_Macedon\">Philip II, Alexander the Great&#8217;s father<\/a>, tomb II belonged to\u00a0<a title=\"Philip III of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_III_of_Macedon\">Philip III of Macedon<\/a>, Alexander the Great&#8217;s half-brother, while tomb III contained\u00a0<a title=\"Alexander IV of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_IV_of_Macedon\">Alexander IV<\/a>, Alexander the Great&#8217;s son.<sup id=\"cite_ref-28\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-28\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>28<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Tomb I also contained the remains of a woman and a baby, who Bartsiokas identified as Philip II&#8217;s young wife\u00a0<a title=\"Cleopatra Eurydice\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cleopatra_Eurydice\">Cleopatra Eurydice<\/a>\u00a0and their newborn child. Cleopatra Eurydice was assassinated along with her newborn child.<sup id=\"cite_ref-29\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina#cite_note-29\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>29<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>You should see, the golden <a title=\"Larnax\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larnax\">larnax<\/a>\u00a0and the golden grave crown of Philip<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The\u00a0<b>Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai (Vergina)<\/b>\u00a0is located 75\u00a0km west of\u00a0<a title=\"Thessaloniki\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thessaloniki\">Thessaloniki<\/a>, Greece, centered around the royal tombs built by the ancient\u00a0<a title=\"Macedonia (ancient kingdom)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macedonia_(ancient_kingdom)\">Kingdom of Macedon<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<a title=\"Aegae (Macedonia)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aegae_(Macedonia)\">Aigai<\/a>. The underground museum containing the burial cluster of\u00a0<a title=\"Philip II of Macedon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_II_of_Macedon\">Philip II of Macedon<\/a>\u00a0began construction in 1993 and was inaugurated in 1997. Exhibits are presented in four connected areas, including the Palace, the royal burial cluster of the\u00a0<a title=\"Argead dynasty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Argead_dynasty\">Temenid dynasty<\/a>\u00a0(burial cluster &#8220;C&#8221;), the burial cluster of Philip II , and a gateway entrance with a semi-open-air exhibition of the sculptures found in the city sanctuaries and the restored upper floor of the Palace of Philip&#8217;s facade. The tombs and other archaeological sites of Aigai were inscribed on the\u00a0<a title=\"UNESCO\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UNESCO\">UNESCO<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"World Heritage List\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Heritage_List\">World Heritage List<\/a>\u00a0in 1996 because of its exceptional architecture and testimony to the transition between city-states and empires in European civilization.<sup id=\"cite_ref-unesco_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Museum_of_the_Royal_Tombs_of_Aigai_(Vergina)#cite_note-unesco-1\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>1<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The collections housed in the museum are the grave goods recovered from archaeological excavations beginning in 1861 and continue to the present day.<sup id=\"cite_ref-museum_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Museum_of_the_Royal_Tombs_of_Aigai_(Vergina)#cite_note-museum-2\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>2<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><br \/><br \/>Among the objects found in the tomb of Philip II were a golden\u00a0<a title=\"Larnax\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larnax\">larnax<\/a>\u00a0emblazoned with the sixteen-rayed &#8220;<a title=\"Vergina Sun\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vergina_Sun\">Sun of Vergina<\/a>&#8221; on its lid, containing the king&#8217;s bones, an intricate gold burial wreath, a silver and gold\u00a0<a title=\"Diadem\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diadem\">diadem<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a title=\"Heracles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heracles\">Heracles<\/a>\u00a0knot, silver and bronze vessels from the funeral feast, and carved ivory ornaments from the funeral couch. Gold armour and\u00a0<a title=\"Greave\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greave\">greaves<\/a>\u00a0with one custom fitted to Philip&#8217;s leg deformed by an improperly healed broken\u00a0<a title=\"Tibia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tibia\">tibia<\/a>, ivory inlaid shields, weapons, ivory reliefs, jewelry, and terracotta votive figurines were also found. Similar objects found in the other tombs, including the jewelry and body adornments from the 9th century BC &#8220;Lady of Aigai&#8221; are also presented.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery
